Book Review of Golden

Golden by Jade Timms: A Radiant Summer Escape

Wow. I will be thinking about this book for a long time. "Golden" by Jade Timms caught my eye before I even cracked open the cover, thanks to its stunning artwork. The simplicity and vibrant colors drew me in, making it hard to resist. But there’s more to this gem— the vague blurb offers just the right amount of excitement to get anyone’s imagination racing, an absolute rarity in the blurble-drenched world of publishing today.

As an Aussie girlie, reading about a summer that unfurls from December to February felt like such a refreshing change. I grew up loving the works of Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson, but they rarely featured a winter sun and beach vibes that mirror my own experiences. In "Golden," I felt so seen; the story truly encapsulates the joyful chaos of Australian summers, evoking nostalgic road trips and endless beach days. I found myself daydreaming and craving that carefree vibe, even beginning to scroll through bikini styles for my next holiday—six months away!

The heart of this book lies in its setting, and Timms paints the landscape around Eddie’s home with an ethereal quality that transported me there. I literally fell asleep imagining I was in a beachfront town in NSW. The descriptions were so vivid and authentic, capturing that exhilarating feeling of endless summer adventures that most of us crave.

Then there’s the music. When "Rage Against the Machine" popped up on the first page, I knew I was in for a treat. Timms weaves references to Baker Boy, Taylor Swift, and the indie tunes I grew up with effortlessly throughout the narrative. It was like a cozy soundtrack to my reading experience. Honestly, seeing my comfort music in print was such an emotional connection for me.

On a deeper level, "Golden" tackles grief with raw honesty, symbolized poignantly through the mud run. Though the beginning threw me off without clear character introductions, I came to cherish how the story unfurled, revealing Eddie’s growth and her journey back to her roots. Her arc with Pat was equally touching; the reconciliation scenes had me reaching for tissues, a testament to Timms’ masterful narrative arc.

And let’s talk names! How cool is “Howl”? I loved the array of characters—Eddie, Stevie, Rads, Viv, Pat, and Blaze—each name embodies the essence of Aussie youth so perfectly. It struck a chord with me, especially since the little girl I babysit is also named Eddie.

As I close this review, I can’t help but think: who might enjoy "Golden"? Anyone who has experienced the wild ride of sibling relationships, who’s been through loss and found their way back, or those who just need a reminder of the magic in everyday life will feel deeply connected to this book.

I’m already convinced that "Golden" might top my 2025 reading list, and I can’t wait to annotate my copy when my friend Eden gifts it to me for my birthday. I’m even planning a playlist to accompany my rereads! Now, let’s see what Jade Timms has in store for us next—I’m all in!
