Review of Convict’s Game (Skeleton Crew, #1) by Jolie Vines
There’s something magical about discovering a new book, especially when it’s wrapped in the thrill of winning an ARC. I was fortunate enough to snag a copy of Convict’s Game through a giveaway from @lover.ofbooks80 on Instagram. While I wasn’t obligated to write a review, how could I resist diving in and sharing my thoughts? This book, a blend of dark romance, suspense, and crime, came to life in a vivid tapestry of characters and intrigue, reminding me why I adore the Deadwater universe.
From the outset, I was captivated by the world Jolie Vines expertly constructs. It’s a gritty yet alluring landscape where danger lurks around every corner, and characters like Roscoe “Convict” Locke rise from the shadows. The layers of his character—filled with amnesia, humor, and a possessive charm—pull you right into his journey. Initially introduced in the Body Count series, Convict’s return after a brush with amnesia is not only gripping but adds a layer of depth to a person we’re eager to know more about. His struggle to rediscover his identity amid a chaotic city like Deadwater kept me turning pages, feeling every ounce of his confusion and determination.
Then there’s Emilia “Mila” Marchant, the sweetheart with a fierce spirit who will stop at nothing to help Convict reclaim his past. Their bond, rooted in danger and an unexpected partnership, showcases the ‘close/forced proximity’ trope perfectly. I couldn’t help but admire Mila’s courage as she navigated challenges that would make most think twice. The dance between her desire to protect and Convict’s instinct to dominate creates a palpable tension that had me gripping the edge of my seat.
What truly stood out was Vines’ ability to balance action with poignant moments of character development. The dialogue sparkles with wit, especially Convict’s snappy remarks that brought a smile to my face even in the book’s darker scenes. One particularly memorable quote encapsulates Convict’s refusal to back down: “In the game of survival, you either play or become prey.” This wisdom underscored the essence of the book—each character playing their part in a deadly chess match while seeking what matters most.
The pacing of Convict’s Game keeps you on your toes, interspersing heart-stopping moments with humorous interludes that felt both natural and refreshing. Jolie Vines has a knack for layering the narrative, introducing familiar faces from past books while effortlessly building the anticipation for future tales. The world expands beautifully without overwhelming the reader—a skill I deeply appreciate.
In a nutshell, Convict’s Game has firmly taken a seat among my favorites in the Deadwater universe. Its blend of romance, suspense, and a murder mystery is thoroughly engaging, making it perfect for readers who enjoy a touch of danger with their love stories. If you’re ready for an adrenaline-pumping ride filled with twisted loyalties and heartfelt connections, this book is definitely for you.
So, if you haven’t yet explored the Body Count series, I highly recommend starting there to get the full impact of Convict’s world. Dive in, and allow yourself to be swept away by the adventures of Deadwater—it’s a ride you won’t want to miss!
