Book Review of Counting on Cole (Wilde Ways, #8)

Review: Counting on Cole (Wilde Ways, #8) by L. A. Fiore

As a long-time fan of L.A. Fiore’s electrifying narratives, I found myself eagerly anticipating Counting on Cole. The moment I caught wind that this beloved character was getting his own story, I couldn’t resist diving into the pages. Fiore has a knack for weaving romance with thrilling elements, and I was ready to see how she would blend the past and present in Cole’s journey—especially after all the build-up since we first met him in Ben’s book.

In Counting on Cole, we revisit a complex relationship that started in a dark place. Two years after Evie’s kidnapping, we see her grappling with the aftermath of that traumatic experience. I was deeply impressed by her transformation into a self-defense aficionado, showcasing how she actively took control of her life. Evie’s character struck a chord with me; her resilience embodies the spirit of someone determined not to be defined by their past.

Cole, on the other hand, is a character struggling with his demons. Having once been a mercenary, he’s on a quest for redemption. The guilt he carries, knowing he couldn’t find her kidnappers, adds a poignant depth to his character. When Erik Wilde offers Cole the chance to be Evie’s bodyguard, the decision is both immediate and fraught. Readers can feel the tension as Cole realizes he must confront not only external threats but also the emotional fallout of their past connection.

This is where Fiore’s storytelling truly shines. The dynamic between Cole and Evie crackles with unresolved tension and simmering anger. The scene where Evie literally shuts the door in his face had me laughing, yet it highlighted the complicated layers of their relationship. Their interactions—prickly yet undeniably charged—make for some of the book’s most compelling moments. I adored how, despite their initial confrontation, Evie recognizes that Cole is the best person to protect her.

The pacing throughout is expertly handled. Fiore oscillates between moments of high tension and softly intimate scenes, such as when Cole bakes cinnamon rolls for Evie. It’s a small detail that showcases his softer side amidst the ‘growly crankypants’ demeanor he possesses. As a reader, this combination of humor and vulnerability made me root for him even more.

Fiore’s writing continues to resonate with warmth and authenticity, drawing you into the emotional landscape of her characters. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the vivid imagery that accompanied Evie’s creative pursuits—without giving anything away, let’s just say the paintings were a highlight for me! Not only did they enhance the setting, but they also added layers of symbolism to Evie’s character arc.

For those who relish second-chance romances wrapped in tension and redemption, Counting on Cole will be a delightful treat. It showcases the journey of two damaged souls who must confront their past to build a future together. By the end, I was left not just satisfied but eagerly looking forward to what L.A. Fiore has in store next for the Wilde Ways series.

If you’re ready for a blend of suspense, heartfelt moments, and the undeniable force of love, I absolutely recommend picking this one up. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest circumstances, hope and connection can prevail and heal. Happy reading!
