Book Review of Love at First Sighting

Review of Love at First Sighting by Mallory Marlowe

I’ve been a fan of Mallory Marlowe ever since I devoured Love and Other Conspiracies. Her knack for weaving humor into unconventional storylines makes her books a delightful escape. So when I picked up Love at First Sighting, I was buzzing with anticipation. The premise had me hooked almost immediately: think Men in Black meets X-Files, with all the playful jabs at government conspiracies and alien shenanigans. How could I resist?

The story kicks off with Carter, who has a mysterious past revolving around an incident that took his father’s life. This setup not only promises intrigue but also paints a backdrop for his quest for answers. Enter El, an influencer with a massive online presence and a penchant for the dramatic—especially when she drops a bombshell video of a UFO chasing her. Unlike other influencers we often see in media, she grapples with her role in this social media-centric world, bringing some depth to her character, though I found my connection with her lacking.

Speaking of connections, I had high hopes for the chemistry between Carter and El. While there’s plenty of witty banter, their relationship felt more like a “happy for now” rather than a full-blown “happily ever after.” Carter’s charisma and ability to generate laughter were undeniable, but El often felt disappointingly one-dimensional. Most of the female characters in the story lack substance, leading to an impression that they were either frustratingly insipid or simply pushovers. It’s a missed opportunity, especially in contrast to the vibrant characters in Marlowe’s previous work.

Despite some character missteps, the pacing of the book is brisk and easy to digest—a perfect choice for readers seeking a light, fluffy read. The last third of the novel picks up significantly, presenting a more engaging narrative that left me wanting to know how it would all unfold. Marlowe’s writing shines here, making light of contemporary culture while still delivering an entertaining plot.

Though I had my qualms, I still see potential audiences for Love at First Sighting. Fans of tongue-in-cheek humor and paranormal play will likely appreciate the book’s lighter moments. Additionally, those looking for a quick, engaging story may find it a refreshing diversion from heavier reads.

In reflecting on my experience, I felt a blend of joy and frustration; I was entertained but left wishing for deeper character arcs. While Love at First Sighting didn’t quite reach the heights of Marlowe’s previous book for me, it reinforced my enthusiasm for her voice and creativity. And perhaps, just maybe, it will resonate with readers who find humor in the quirky realm of influencers and extraterrestrial antics, making for a fun albeit flawed reading experience.
