Book Review of Solo Stan

Book Review: Solo Stan by Talia Tucker

When I first stumbled upon Solo Stan, I must admit that Young Adult fiction and romance usually aren’t my go-to genres. However, Talia Tucker’s engaging writing grabbed my attention, and I couldn’t resist diving in. I owe a big thank you to Tucker and Kokila Books for providing me with a NetGalley link for this ARC! I was pleasantly surprised to discover how much this book resonated with me, transforming what I thought would be a light read into a captivating journey.

From the spark of the first page, I was whisked away into the lives of our main characters, Dakarai and Elias. Their distinct voices come alive with such clarity that it’s impossible not to become invested in their adventures. The narrative flows effortlessly, making it a quick read that is filled with humor, heart, and a touch of adventure. What stands out most is how Tucker seamlessly weaves themes of friendship, identity, and love throughout their scavenger hunt journey. I found myself rooting for them almost immediately, even quicker than they found their way to each other.

One aspect of Solo Stan that truly captured my interest was the inclusion of astrology. Dakarai’s fascination with it isn’t just a quirky trait; it breathes life into his character and serves as a lens through which we understand him better. For someone who doesn’t know much about astrology, this unique twist made for an engaging exploration that added depth to the story.

The humor is distinctly Gen-Z, and as someone of a similar age, I found the dialogue refreshingly relatable. The characters’ interactions felt authentic, showcasing friendships and relationships that are not only healthy but also realistically messy—just like in real life. Watching Dakarai and Elias navigate their world while dealing with their emotions was not only entertaining but also reflective of the experiences many of us face today.

Talia Tucker excels in her portrayal of diverse identities, particularly through the lens of bisexuality, which deeply resonated with me. Finding authentic representation is sometimes more challenging than it should be, but Solo Stan ticks all the boxes—I felt seen and validated in this space.

Overall, this book is a delightful blend of romance, humor, and adventure that left me amazed and hopeful. The writing is sharp, the pacing is just right, and the relationship dynamics are truly heartwarming. I can confidently say that I cannot wait to add a physical copy to my collection and explore more of Talia Tucker’s work.
