Book Review of Bad Mother

Exploring the Complexities of Connection in "Bad Mother"

When I first picked up "Bad Mother" by the talented Alex Sheridan, I was drawn in by the intriguing premise and the promise of a thrilling mystery. As a fan of the author’s previous works, I had high hopes for Sienna and Gavin’s story, wanting to dive into a world of suspense, romance, and emotional depth. While Sheridan certainly delivered on some fronts, the journey left me with mixed feelings, creating a reading experience that was both engaging and slightly disappointing.

At the heart of "Bad Mother" is Sienna, a determined detective forced out of the NYPD and back to her roots in Reno. When a case leads her to an unexpected encounter with her ex-fiancé, Gavin, sparks fly amid the unfolding mystery. The plot is rich with twists and suspenseful moments, effectively keeping the pages turning. However, as I delved deeper into the narrative, I found the emotional connections between the characters to be somewhat lacking. While Sienna’s loyalty and determination shone through, I yearned for a more profound exploration of her character and for Gavin to step fully into the spotlight.

Sheridan’s writing style is fluid and engaging, maintaining a good pace throughout the story until the ending. However, when that climactic moment arrived, I felt a rush that sadly led to an abrupt conclusion. The resolution was like finishing a thrilling rollercoaster ride only to find the park was closing early—half-hearted and unsatisfying. It left me yearning for deeper closure regarding the couple’s relationship, especially given their intricate history.

The characters had potential; Gavin, the caring hero, showed promise and warmth, yet I struggled to fully understand him. I wanted more of his backstory, more connecting threads that could tie us to his inner world. The dual POVs allowed glimpses into both Sienna’s and Gavin’s minds, but at times it felt like reading merely the surface of a deeper story.

One of the highlights was the exploration of themes surrounding forgiveness, loyalty, and the messiness of love, delicately woven throughout the mystery of the case that intertwined their lives. Moments of tension and past hurts echoed throughout, creating a push and pull that kept my interest piqued. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling that a deeper emotional dive could have elevated the reading experience.

Although "Bad Mother" has its shortcomings, there’s still much to appreciate. Those who enjoy romantic thrillers with a sprinkle of nostalgia and mystery will likely find it engaging. While it left me wishing for more, I still believe Sheridan’s voice shines through, captivating readers with its potential.

Ultimately, I came away from this read feeling like I had missed out on the full emotional punch I know Sheridan is capable of delivering. As I close the book, I can’t help but hope that her next venture dives deeper into that emotional connection, channeling those complex feelings that linger long after the pages are turned. If you’re curious about the interplay between love and mystery, "Bad Mother" could be worth your time. Just be prepared for a hint of closure that might not fully satisfy.
