Book Review: Bitter House by Kiersten Modglin
Discovering a new author whose work resonates deeply is always a thrill, and my latest find, Kiersten Modglin, has quickly captured my attention. After finishing Hemlock—a resounding 5-star read for me—I couldn’t resist diving into Bitter House. With a premise that echoes some of my favorite thrillers, including Heiress by Rachel Hawkins, I was eager to be swept away by this new tale.
A Not-So-Sweet Inheritance
When Bridget inherits the Bitter House from a deceased relative, the excitement is palpable—until she learns that her arch-nemesis, Cole, also lays claim to it. Their childhood rivalry simmers just beneath the surface, making for an explosive mix of tension and dark humor. The foundation of their relationship is littered with resentment, stubbornness, and just enough shared history to keep readers guessing.
The dual narrative structure—juxtaposing Bridget’s present-day experiences with compelling flashbacks featuring the deceased—adds depth and intrigue, gradually peeling away layers of mystery. As Bridget begins receiving ominous letters revealing unsettling secrets about the house, you can almost feel the walls closing in, and it’s impossible to put the book down.
Complex Characters with Relatable Flaws
One of the most fascinating aspects of Bitter House is the mix of charm and childishness in its main characters. Bridget and Cole’s back-and-forth banter certainly keeps things lively, but I found myself rolling my eyes at their more petty disagreements. For instance, when Cole whines about feeling shunned in the house, only to later brag about his various conquests, it feels a bit contradictory—and perhaps intentionally so. This complexity magnifies the dynamic tension between them; it’s both amusing and, at times, frustratingly juvenile.
But isn’t that just a slice of life? We all have those unresolved conflicts and miscommunications in our past, making the characters relatable—even if I wished they would just have a mature conversation!
The Charm of Modglin’s Style
Kiersten Modglin’s writing shines through her ability to set a mood and build suspense. The pacing felt just right—quick enough to maintain my interest while allowing enough moments of reflection. Her skill in creating a vivid atmosphere helped me feel like I was right there in the Bitter House, waiting for the next twist.
One memorable moment that stood out was the serene juxtaposition of the house’s beauty with the underlying secrets it harbored. It resonated deeply, reminding me that appearances can often be deceiving. This theme of hidden truths is intricately woven throughout the novel, leaving readers questioning the reliability of not just the characters, but also their perceptions.
Who Will Enjoy This Read?
If you’re a fan of domestic thrillers with a touch of historical intrigue, Bitter House will not disappoint. It’s perfect for those who love unearthing secrets and savoring the kind of tension that only comes from a shared past. While I might still hold Hemlock as my favorite of Modglin’s works, this book has solidified my admiration for her storytelling abilities.
As I turn the last page, I find myself craving more of this author’s flair for suspenseful narratives. I’m eager to explore what else Kiersten Modglin has in store. Thank you, Dreamscape Media, Kiersten Modglin, and NetGalley for the advanced listening copy—this journey through Bitter House has been truly rewarding!
